Trick: How to Enable USB Mass Storage mode in Lumia devices

29

USB mass storage mode has been one of the missing feature for the Lumia series running Windows Phone 7.5. You always need to carry Zune in your computer for you to transfer files from your Lumia. It’s somewhat a pain and USB mass storage has always been a better option for file transfer and back up.

This tutorial will let your Lumia be detected as a USB mass storage device when you plug it in to your computer.
Take note that this trick changes your computer’s registry information, so be careful to follow the steps. This works from the computer that you are currently using so if you have another pc then you have to do the same trick. (This site nor myself won’t be liable for any problems with your computer)

*Note: according to the source this will work for Images, Music & Video but any music files transferred are grouped under “Unkown Album”

*Before we proceed right click Device Parameters and click Export in case if something goes wrong this will restore the registry to old state

Alright, so Let’s Start!

  1. Open Registry Editor by typing “ regedit ” in start bar or in Run tool.
  2. In the Left Pane click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and find a folder tree called SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet ->  Enum and then USB.In short, the complete path should be:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ->SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet ->  Enum -> USB ->VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00 -> Device Parameters
  3. Now, check the values under the Device Parameters. Now we will edit the registry values of those 3 highlighted above. In the right pane double-click the registry value called:
ShowInShell and change its value from 0 to 1
PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell and change its value from 1 to 0
    EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1
  4. Once the values are changed, you can now close the registry editor.

Afterwards, you can plug in your Lumia device and you should get this:

Now your Lumia device works onUSB mass storage mode. It is normal to see two folders for the Lumia device on USB mass storage mode. You can access your files on both folders. Transfer rate is fast like the usual USB transfer speed.
After using USB Mass storage mode in Lumia don’t forget to eject device before removing the usb cable.

hi! I just got a new Lumia 900. I followed the steps u described above and when I got to Device Parameters there was only one blue item there ” ExtPropDescSemaphore”. My pc doesnt have the 3 you described.
so, then, I’ve tried the same on my WinXP laptop and it doesnt even have the folder VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00 … :-(
What shall I do?! Help, please!

hi Rv Cuarto u did great job there , i own lumia 900 and i did what u told and it worked , now if i can download app manually which i already have from marketplace but cant sideload it because lumia 900 don’t have sd card. please find solution on this and thanks again, i will tell my friends about this site….

Hi Ashiq! Thanks for your comment. My pleasure to help people. As for sideloading of app, that one is really tedious. One method I did before was the ‘devunlock’ method. Now I have screen capture app on my L800. I can also install cracked .xap games… but that requies a dev account. I will try to post it here, on the weekends. Thank you for sharing my site :)

Hi Rv Cuarto/Christian,the regedit works perfectly,my phone now showing as a portable media player….but thats it..i cant see any folders and it wont allow me to paste anything in it…what am i missing…..

  • Good

Rv, thanks very this worked perfectly on my Nokia Lumia 900, and I can now see it as mass Storage. I run a Windows 7.5 mobile
Aaron, what i noticed is that if you close Zune, you wont see anything when you click the phone mass storage icon which displays as media play. so try close your Zune application and you will be able to see the folders on your phone when you click the icon.

  • Chirag

Hey Rv Cuarto, I have bought a new Lumia 920 & I tried the above steps but still could not connect it as a mass storage. Can you plz modify the steps…
    Thank You…

  • http://nokiarevolution.com Rv Cuarto

Hi, this trick only applies to wp 7 … lumia 920 is a wp8 so it should work in mass storage autimatically

  • Chirag

If we are referring to copying photos, videos & music as mass storage then it does allow it. But I am talking of using it as a flash drive. For eg. I just received a winrar file ( 250 MB) through bluetooth from my friend s mobile. But now that winrar file is not visible in my mobile also nor it is showing in the PC, but it is occupying space in the mobile. Thats why I thought that mobile is not working as a mass storage. I dont know to get rid of this problem. Plz help…
    Thank You Rv Cuarto

  • Chirag

Also if we get to know that where the files received through bluetooth get stored on the mobile , we can get rid of this problem. Its difficult time for me, precious memory getting used in storing that is not visible at all … : ( : (

These instructions did not work for me in a Lumia 1020. There was no folder called VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00. I also tried searching the registry for the variable “ShowInShell” and got no results.

  • Toan

Me too, I don’t see that key VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00 on my XP3.
    Can I add it manually?

  • huw

Me also I cant seem to find VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00 in the registry.

  • Nishan

    its not working :(

This step is really tricky… not stable to work 100%
